Since the early days of Rotary's establishment on the south side of Brisbane, the formation of a lunchtime Rotary club had been given more than passing consideration.
When he assumed office in 1982/83, District Governor Nick Dyer decided the time was right for some affirmative action in the matter and he appointed a Special Representative to investigate. This initiative was endorsed by District Governor Dave Mayo when he came to office in 1983/84, and it was during his year that PP Lloyd Fleming (Rocklea Club) assumed the responsibility of District Governor's Representative and took up the ultimate challenge of bringing about the club's establishment.
As it was envisaged that membership of the new club would be drawn from within the combined boundaries of Rocklea, Salisbury and Acacia Ridge Clubs, Lloyd's committee consisted of John Harper representing Salisbury, Bevan Fleming representing Acacia Ridge and Earle Russ representing the District Extension Committee.
A considerable amount of organizational activity followed, culminating in the very first interest meeting at the Royal Queensland Aero Club on Thursday, 14 June 1984 with thirty four Rotarians and/or prospective new members present. An establishment meeting was held the following week and the Rotary Club of Archerfield Inc was officially informed of the granting of its Charter one week and one day later. |
